Jennifer Warnes - Right Time of the Night

I've been too long, looking at a photograph
Through an unchanging window pane
With a Saturday and Sunday off
I’ve been too long, looking at the world outside
Sitting in an office on the fourteenth floor
Dying in a shirt and tie

And if a place get a hold on a man too long
He’ll sit right there looking till the choice is gone
This life you’re living is your one and only
So you’d better get a move on

And you’d better do something
Or you will never do nothing
You got a hold on a good thing
It’s gonna get away

I’ve been too long heading for a heart attack
I took a secretary for a dinner for two
And I woke with a broken back
I’ve been too long in this Saturday and Sunday life
Staring at the woman in the opposite chair, I wonder if she’s my wife

And if a place get a hold on a man too long
He’ll sit right there looking till the curtain’s drawn
This life you’re living is your one and only
So you’d better get your shoes on

And you’d better do something
Or you will never do nothing
You got a hold on a good thing
It’s gonna get away

Was there a reason for this?
Was there a passionate kiss?
Or just a grope in a room
Was there a wedding and flowers
And hours and hours of sweet honeymoon?
Were they playing our tune?

And if a place get a hold on a man too long
He’ll sit right there looking till the choice is gone
This life you’re living is your one and only
So you’d better get a move on

And you’d better do something
Or you will never do nothing
You got a hold on a good thing
It’s gonna get away

MTV played a part in the de-evolution of music too. Since it's totally image oriented, artists began to rely on that. Dance moves and gestures overtook the music, and thanks to MTV staples like Madonna, the leather clad bimbos and himbos you see today are more dedicated to choreography rather than a few touching chords.

What you say about Madonna is exactly what critics were saying about Elvis almost 40 years earlier; that he relied on swiveling hips instead of musical quality. Motown used choreography a generation before MTV. My point is that every generation is apt to lament of the demise of the new one's music, calling it trash, watered down, shallow, etc. There were parents in my neighborhood who didn't much like the lyrics of the song we're listening to now.
